Single-area laser hair removal sessions cluster around a median of $100, with a typical spread of $67 to $149.50 across the six providers in our pricing sample. That is a small sample, so read it as a sense of scale rather than a national figure. A full course of six to eight sessions is what actually determines your total.

Know the types

Price differences usually trace back to the hardware and the setting, not to the salon's postcode.

Alexandrite lasers run at 755 nanometres. Melanin absorbs that wavelength strongly, which makes them fast and effective on pale skin with dark hair, and correspondingly risky on deeper skin tones where surrounding skin absorbs the energy too.

Diode lasers at roughly 800 to 810 nanometres are the workhorse of the industry. They handle a broader range of skin tones than alexandrite and cover large areas quickly, which is why most high-volume clinics run them.

Nd:YAG lasers at 1064 nanometres penetrate deeper and are absorbed far less by surface melanin. That makes them the safest option for Fitzpatrick types IV to VI, and generally the more uncomfortable of the three.

IPL is not a laser. Intense pulsed light emits a broad spectrum rather than a single wavelength, which makes it cheaper per session and less precise. It typically needs more sessions for a comparable result, so a cheap IPL package is not automatically the cheaper route.

At-home devices are almost always IPL at reduced power. They can maintain a result, but they are not a substitute for a clinical course on coarse hair.

Session pricing also depends on whether an area is classed as small, such as an upper lip or underarm, or large, such as full legs or a back. Clinics price those tiers very differently, so always confirm which tier your area falls into before comparing two quotes.

Benefits

Laser delivers permanent hair reduction, which is a specific claim worth reading literally. Follicles destroyed during a session do not regrow, but not every follicle is in the active growth phase on the day you are treated, which is exactly why a course is needed. Most people end up with a substantial and lasting reduction in density and thickness rather than bare skin, followed by occasional maintenance sessions.

Compared with waxing, the practical wins are the end of the growing-out period between appointments, sharply fewer ingrown hairs once the course progresses, and no monthly booking. For anyone whose real problem is chronic folliculitis or ingrowns on the bikini line, that is the strongest reason to switch.

Now the honest limits. Laser needs pigment to work, so white, grey, red and very light blonde hair does not respond meaningfully — no laser type solves this. Hormonal conditions such as PCOS drive regrowth that requires ongoing maintenance regardless of how good the initial course was. You must shave rather than wax or pluck for the entire course, because the root has to be present for the laser to target. And tanned skin, including self-tan, either raises the burn risk or gets you turned away at the door.

What it costs

With only six providers contributing, that range says more about how widely clinics price than about any true national average, and it does not distinguish small areas from large ones.

Four things move a quote inside that range. Area size is the biggest: an upper lip and a pair of full legs are not remotely the same job, and the same clinic will span its whole price range across those two. Laser type matters, since Nd:YAG treatment on deeper skin tones is slower and often priced higher. Package structure matters more than most people expect, as clinics routinely discount a prepaid course of six against the per-session rate, which is where the real saving sits. And maintenance sessions after the course are usually billed at the single-session rate, so ask whether they are included before prepaying.

When you compare providers, compare cost per full course rather than per session, and confirm how many sessions the quoted package includes. A low per-session number attached to a package of four is worse value than a higher one attached to a package of eight.

Aftercare

First 24 to 48 hours. Expect redness and slight bumps around each follicle, similar to mild razor burn. Cool compresses and aloe are appropriate; ice directly on skin is not. Skip the gym, sauna, steam room and hot showers, because heat on freshly treated follicles is what turns normal redness into a lasting irritation.

First week. No sun on the treated area and no self-tanner. Use SPF 30 or higher on anything exposed. Around days five to fourteen, treated hairs push out of the skin and shed, which looks like regrowth but is not — resist the urge to pluck them, and let a gentle exfoliation on day seven help them clear.

Between sessions. Shave whenever you like, but do not wax, thread, pluck or epilate at any point during the course, since removing the root leaves the next session with nothing to target. Space appointments as the clinic specifies, generally four to six weeks on the face and six to eight on the body, which tracks the growth cycle for each area.

Skip retinoids on the treated area for a few days either side, and tell your provider about any antibiotic or medication that increases photosensitivity, since several common ones do.
