The short answer

Laser hair removal directs a single wavelength of light into the pigment of a hair follicle, heating it enough to disable the growth structure. It suits people whose hair is darker than their skin, and it reduces hair rather than erasing it. The American Academy of Dermatology puts most patients at two to six treatments, with roughly a 10% to 25% reduction after the first session.

Know the types

The wavelength on the machine matters more than the brand name on the window. Three cover almost everything offered around the Valley, plus one impostor.

Alexandrite, 755 nm. Melanin absorbs this wavelength greedily, which makes it fast and effective on fine or light-brown hair in Fitzpatrick I-III skin. That same greed is the problem: on tanned or naturally deeper skin it is the likeliest of the three to leave a burn or a pale patch. In a city where people are outdoors most of the year, an honest clinic will ask about your last two weeks of sun before they reach for it.

Diode, 810 nm. The workhorse. Larger spot sizes and contact cooling make it practical for legs, backs and chests, and most of the sliding "in-motion" handpieces you will see demonstrated are diodes. It handles a wider skin-tone range than alexandrite without giving up much speed.

Nd:YAG, 1064 nm. Penetrates deepest and is absorbed least by surface melanin, which is exactly why it is the standard for Fitzpatrick IV-VI skin and for anyone who tans easily. It stings more than the other two and generally needs more passes, and that trade is worth making if your skin tone calls for it.

IPL is not a laser. It is a broadband flashlamp with filters over it, so the energy is spread across a band of wavelengths rather than aimed at one. It can work on high-contrast hair, but expect more sessions and less predictable results. If a price looks unusually low, ask whether the device is IPL, and get the answer in nanometers.

Benefits, and the honest limits

What it genuinely does well: it ends the ingrown-hair and razor-burn cycle on necks, bikini lines and underarms better than any topical fix, it takes minutes per area once you are past the first session, and the reduction holds for months or years. The AAD notes that regrowth, when it happens, tends to come back finer and lighter than the original hair.

The limits are worth stating plainly. Light energy needs pigment to grip, so white, grey, true red and genuinely blonde hair will not respond, and no consultation should promise otherwise. If your hair growth is hormonally driven, you should plan on periodic maintenance sessions indefinitely rather than a finite course. Active tanning postpones treatment. Most clinics defer pregnant clients, not because of proven harm but because nobody runs trials on pregnant people. And this is a course, not an appointment: four to eight weeks between facial sessions, eight to twelve weeks on the body, because only follicles currently in their growth phase respond.

What it costs

Across the six salons in our sample that publish a laser hair removal price, the median session was $100, with the typical spread running $67 to $149.50. Six is a thin sample, so treat that as a rough anchor rather than a market rate.

The number moves on area size more than anything else, then on whether you are buying single sessions or a package of six, and then on device class. Ask for two figures in writing before you commit: the per-session price for your specific area, and the total for a full course including the maintenance sessions the clinic expects you to need. A package that looks cheap per session but locks you into a wavelength wrong for your skin is not a saving. You can compare providers and put the same two questions to each.

Aftercare

First 24 hours. Cool the area with a clean cold pack for ten minutes at a time. Skip hot showers, saunas and workouts that raise skin temperature. Redness and small raised bumps around each follicle are the expected response, not a complication.

Days two to four. Keep the area clean and unfragranced. No retinoids, no acids, no scrubs on treated skin.

Days five to fourteen. Treated hairs push out of the follicle in what looks like regrowth but is shedding. Exfoliate gently with a washcloth to help them clear. Do not tweeze or wax.

For the whole course. Shaving is the only hair removal allowed between sessions, because waxing, threading and plucking remove the target the laser needs. Wear SPF 30 or higher on any treated skin that sees daylight, and skip deliberate tanning entirely.
